Shoutbox needs one of 2 things to work well: 1) a 24 hour backlog. 2) An advanced shoutbox that posts everything entered to a master thread so that conversations can be retained. Or... you could just post in a thread in the chit chat section! Never ending backlog and everything retained.

You don't talk the same way in a thread as you would in the shout box. I miss it too.

Plus, the shoutbox was on EVERY page. So, while you're browsing the forum, reading and writing more detailed posts, it follows you along and you can keep checking to see if someone has a complaint or wants to say hello or needs quick advice on something - or is helping you.
Forums and chat (especial tweet-sized chat) are totally different in terms of operation and intended content, although there is crossover, and whenever there WAS something useful said, it of course was lost to the ether in short order.

Well, it wasn't just the functionality of the shoutbox that went into the decision. You'll note there's a lot more posting now -- posts that before just went into the shoutbox that only a couple of people saw. You'll note there's a lot more posting now -- posts that before just went into the shoutbox that only a couple of people saw. So there's also the question of having content which is limited time + limited audience versus content that everyone can interact with... That's a good point from an archivist/administrator's point of view. But just in case someone is keeping track of the pro/con votes: I miss the shoutbox as well. There's something appealing about spontaneity and volatileness (as exemplified by Snapchat's success, for example). This forum is less attractive to me now that the shoutbox is gone, and that's despite the fact that I probably missed 95% of what was going on there.

Maybe it is possible to have a shoutbox that if someone is tagged they can see what was said when they next log in?
Sorry not a computer genius like most of you lot, just miss the old box of shouts.
It seems "dead" around here now, if you have a conversation in a thread with someone it kind of ruins it, and looks poop to anyone else not involved, I mean threads named as "SD rev TLE" or whatever with irrelevant chitter chatter.
Non by me, obviously.

OK, due to the immense pressure that has been put on the Admin team there is now a poll in this thread for you to vote if you want it back or not. Please vote ( especially if you don't because, as in most votes, those that want change shout the loudest, but not always in a shout box! ) Just a few things to point out. The number of shouts wont/can't change. The shouts are kept in the security log of the forum but the amount displayed can't be changed. The format would be the same as it was before. If it is brought back, I think a permanent header would be added, saying that questions about A8 should be added to a thread, or one created. One of the problems with a shout box is that a question is asked, then answered, and then it's gone. If someone else has the same problem, the cycle repeats. If it is in a thread then there is a permanent go to point. Just a couple of points from above: This is not possible. Sorry! This is the problem. Complaints or help should be in a thread so that it is there for other people. Get your votes in!

the shout box is fairly restricted when it comes to customisability, and what we had is what we can have, pretty much. when a post gets bumped off, it stays off.
I like that we have had more chat in threads, but the box does add a little life, instancy of communication, that you can't get with threads.
I guess if we keep it to utterly inane banter, finding out who's awake (and vaguely conversational) and important announcements, everything else in between can stay in the threads. I know we won't stick to that, but we can try. and try to make more use of tags in threads. and using recent posts and participated links on the toolbar (those that don't already.

( especially if you don't because, as in most votes, those that want change shout the loudest, but not always in a shout box! ) So who were the loudmouths that effected the change (!) from shoutbox to no shoutbox a while ago? Kidding aside, thanks for the vote. "Yes."

Ditto, thank you, Admin does this mean the voting is redundant now?

Yep, the vote is now approved and it's back! We'll see how it goes and if it is kept to shouts/chat then it'll stay. If it turns into "I need help with this in A8", "how do I contact GL CC", "Is the first ramp best flat or barreled" or similar, and detracts from the forum, we may have to have another re-think about it. For now, it's here to stay.

90% of the time the shoutbox shows only half of a conversation. At least make it show what was shouted during the last 24 hours.
Also right now it has some information which can be useful in the R&D thread. I vote to remove it.

90% of the time the shoutbox shows only half of a conversation. At least make it show what was shouted during the last 24 hours. It has been mentioned before. The shoutbox will only show the last 20 comments. If a conversation is longer than that and has important information, it should be in a thread.
Also right now it has some information which can be useful in the R&D thread. As above I vote to remove it. It has been removed and there was a vote to bring it back. We wont be having another vote...
